Steve Bakunas and Linda Lavin “Painting Portraits” at Birdland

“My View” written by Stephen Sorokoff

If Charlie Rose, while interviewing the famous actors on his PBS program, could also paint their pictures, he would be another Steve Bakunas.  That’s what Steve accomplished in a special event at Birdland with his wife Linda Lavin.   Steve, the artist, prodded Linda, and Ms. Lavin complied and kept the assembled in rapt attention and laughter as she told some wonderful stories.   Since Linda “tells it like it is” some I can’t repeat.  However. . .

I didn’t know that when Linda first came to New York City as a struggling actor she lived in a 5th floor walk-up; bathroom down the hall.  She had a date with Buddy (soon to be know as Charles) Strouse, and was afraid romance would never be on any dates’ agenda because of the long schlepp up to her apartment.  Because of Linda’s skill as a typist she earned money that way too, but explained that although she was very fast she was also inaccurate.  It took her all day to complete a page!

Well, as they say “You know the rest of the story.”   I don’t know how Steve managed to paint this dynamic moving object but I guess he’s been lovingly looking at her face for a while.
