Singer/Songwriter/Musician Joe South Dies

Joe South was a singer/songwriter/musician who wrote for Elvis Presley and wrote the Grammy-winning “Games People Play” and “(I Never Promised You) A Rose Garden.” He passed away today at 72 after a heart attack.

Born in  Atlanta, South began playing guitar at 11, and at 17  joined Nashville producer Pete Drake’s band.  One of the most sought after studio musician, he played for Simon and Garfunkel, Bob Dylan and Aretha Franklin. He recorded with Dylan on “Blonde on Blonde,” played on Franklin’s “Chain of Fools” and Presley’s “Walk a Mile in My Shoes.” South’s track “Hush” later became a hit for Deep Purple.

Drug abuse stopped him from truly becoming a star.
