On Monday, August 13th at 6:00 PM at the Bruno Walter Auditorium, at The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts, Dorothy and Lewis B. Cullman Center: 111 Amsterdam Avenue, Noel and Company will present a free staged reading of “Star Quality.”Seating is limited and on a first come first served basis and will star Bebe Neuwirth and Brian Murray.
Star Quality is an hilarious back stage comedy (never produced in Coward’s lifetime) – about an undeniably temperamental actress (forgiven only in light of her supreme ‘star quality’), the naive young playwright, a rather novice director, his jaded ‘assistant’ & the hilarious ensuing hijinks. An ideal homage to ‘the theatre’ for anyone who works in, loves and/ or hates it – and all it’s irresistible flippancies.
“We’re thrilled to work with Miss Neuwirth and Mr. Murray – two of our theatre’s most riveting and gifted actors, playing two of the most memorable roles in Coward’s canon. It’s an honour to direct this significant piece celebrating the final week of the Star Quality: The World of Noel Coward exhibit. Considered an “unfinished work”, Star Quality is truly one of his most mature, dazzling masterpieces – chock full of his infamous wit and sophistication. In the tradition of great theatrical divas none surpass the magnitude of Coward’s most exciting creation – we invite you to experience the formidable Miss Lorraine Barrie.”
Keith Merrill is the artistic director of Noël and Company. Along with producing director Mary Ellen Ashley and managing director Christopher John Stegmayer, Noël and Company has produced NOËL COWARD: The Women of His World (a commissioned piece) at Lincoln Center, created and directed by Keith Merrill – starring Dana Ivey, Cady Huffman, Alan Cox and Dee Hoty; The Vortex, directed by Gabriel Barre with Edward Hibbert, Bobby Steggert and Suzanne Bertish; Design For Living directed by Keith Merrill with Amy Rutberg and Kevin Collins and The Mousetrap directed by Larry Fuller with Carole Shelley, Paxton Whitehead and Jill Paice. On October 15th Noël and Company welcome the iconic Andrea Marcovicci, who will star in two Coward one-acts, and in November the renowned director Scott Schwartz will helm Joe Orton’s Entertaining Mr. Sloane.
