Mexican-American Actress Lupe Ontiveros of Selena Fame Passes

“Selena” and “As Good As It Gets,” actress Lupe Ontiveros, has died from liver cancer.  She was 69. The Mexican-American actress estimates she has played a maid in at least 150 films or plays. She narrated the documentary, “Maid in America.” She is best known in the Latino community for her portrayal of Yolanda Saldivar, the murderer of Selena in the movie Selena, and to Anglo audiences as the housekeeper on The Goonies and “Who’s the Boss.” She also appeared in “Real Women Have Curves” and “El Norte.”

“Selena” co-star Jacob Vargas was at her bedside when she passed.

Ontiveros was a community activist as much as a movie star, and a major voice in the Latino community’s ongoing fight against HIV/AIDS. In the past, Ontiveros was a co-host of the Latino Commission on AIDS fundraiser.

Two of Lupe’s three sons are hearing impaired.  Her husband and sons survive Ontiveros.  The Latin American community morns Lupe’s passing.
