There can never be too many views about Marilyn Maye and Michael Feinstein!
“My View” Written by Stephen Sorokoff
Like the brilliance of a Bach Fugue, Michael Feinstein and Marilyn Maye created an interplay of conversation, musicianship and entertainment seldom attained by the pairing of two divergent entertainers. Marilyn, known for her Jazz-swing equaled by few (but is also pure romance when singing ballads), and Michael, the preeminent exponent of the romantic American Songbook (who also swings with the best of them).
A Fugue is not a defined structure, its greatness is derived from ingenious counterpoint. So it is with Marilyn & Michael. The two of them created an evening’s entertainment that made me think, boy am I glad I’m getting to see this!
Do you know the feeling you would have walking into Trump Tower and seeing Donald in the lobby? Well, entering a club with the name Feinstein’s on it, about to hear Michael, is like that! At piano concerts there is always a special reverence when you know that the performer studied with a teacher who, in turn, had a teacher who studied with Chopin. So it is with Michael. You are listening to someone whose lineage is fused with the Gershwins, as well as the fact that his appearances in every major venue in the world are fused with countless show biz luminaries. It adds an element to his performance that keeps you captivated and spellbound.
Marilyn’s lineage is Johnny Carson, Steve Allen, appearances in every major recording studio and nightclub and associations with many of the great musicians of the last half century.
Their show at Feinstein’s is an historic event thru September 22nd.
