“My View” written by Stephen Sorokoff
If you are reading this to find out what kind of show Linda Lavin performed at 54 Below last night, you have my sympathy. You will probably not get a chance to see this 2 time event. I know Linda, I know Billy, I know piano, so I knew what to expect. I guess the tip off as to what was going to take place was the fact that there didn’t seem to be any “civilians” in the packed 54 Below. Everyone seemed to be in the music and theater business.
Yes, I know it was only last week that I “viewed” that I had seen the type of Cabaret Show that will live in my musical memory forever (Marilyn Maye & Michael Feinstein). I never thought the next one would occur so fast. Billy Stritch, the musicians’ musician who seems to find rhythms, notes, and harmonies like few do, and that exist only in music heaven, created the carpet. Linda walked and ran on it with a competence that only super talents and seasoned performers can produce. She, of course, only had the best on stage with her….Aaron Weinstein, Steve Doyle, John Hart and best husband, artist, actor, drummer Steve Bakunas. I know you missed it, so next time watch for it. Shooting stars don’t happen often.
Actually, I think we’ve all lucked out. Linda & Steve Bakunas will be spending more time with us New Yorkers.
