Jamie deRoy & Friends at 54 Below

“My View” written by Stephen Sorokoff

Friends should not review friends’ Cabaret shows for obvious reasons.   Of course, if this rule were adhered to, a Jamie deRoy & Friends show would never get a review (for obvious reasons).   “My View” had a Great View of Jamie’s show because of the wonderfully constructed 54 Below.   There’s not a bad seat in the house – except in this case the piano bench.  Ron Abel, as usual, used a high stool instead, which always has the effect of highlighting his superb musicianship.  Ron is one of those pianists who has the ability to take a simple lead sheet and instantly turn it into a powerful arrangement that totally compliments the vocalist.   Since I’m a friend of Jamie deRoy I will follow my self imposed rule and not tell you how wonderfully entertaining her show was.  I will refrain from any mention of the fact that she has a unique ability to entertain, host, curate and perform.  There is a well honed professionalism and creative ability that makes Jamie’s stage presence so natural and at the same time so exciting.

I’ve noticed that at any Jamie deRoy & Friends show her guests seem to be at the top of their game.  I imagine it’s hard for a  performer to turn it on for a short segment, but Jamie has a unique way of creating an environment that allows the magic to happen.   Of course, she has a secret weapon.  Barry Kleinbort! – -  One of the theater communities most creative and knowledgeable constituents.  Since I’m not friends with any of Jamie’s guests for this show I can tell you how wonderful Christina Bianco, Kevin Meaney, David Pomeranz, Daniel Reichard and “The Countess” were.  No question about it.  You know that Jamie deRoy is “hands on.”
