Jim & Billy broke a promise. Their gig at Bemelman’s Bar at The Carlyle Hotel was going to be so different than Mondays Cast Party at Birdland. It was for a while. The creative piano playing of Billy Stritch, the romantic vocals, Jim’s sophisticated upper East Side song list and witty repartee. But then— some guy from a rock group got up and joined Billy in the Great American Songbook. In all fairness to Jim, it wasn’t his fault. He didn’t announce as he does at Birdland “and now some of the best singers on the planet” But all of a sudden…it happened as Bono joined Billy Stritch in “I’ve Got You Under My Skin.” As Billy said after the duet. “Did this really happen?”
It did and I’m going back next week to see what’s gonna happen.
