Break out the martini glasses … Mad Men is back on TV!
The DivaGals caught up with the series costume designer Janie Bryant, who shared with us her secrets to the wardrobes of the series’ two working girls: Joan Harris and Peggy Olson.
Joan Harris (played by Christina Hendricks): Janie takes her cues from the real curvy gals of that era to create Joan’s wardrobe. “Marilyn Monroe, Jayne Mansfield and Sophia Loren — I believe that Joan would be inspired by the women of her time,” Janie shares. Jewel tones strengthen the character, while the sheath dress is an absolute must to showcase Joan’s incredible curves. “The basic design for a sheath is all about the bust, waist and hips,” says Janie, adding that a “fitted blouse, a pencil skirt” and proper foundation are the keys Joan follows to create her envious hour-glass shape.
Peggy Olson (played by Elisabeth Moss): The character’s fashion has changed as she’s worked up the career ladder, though it still has some elements of the buttoned-up Catholic school girl look. “It was all about the pleats, the plaids, the polka-dots and the Peter Pan collars,” Janie says. Now Peggy has evolved to “the woman in the business suit.”
Drooling? We figured. Luckily you can dress just like a Mad Men woman by taking a trip to your local Banana Republic, which features the Mad Men Collection.
“Florals, prints and bright colors, definitely,” exclaims Janie over what should be in our wardrobes this spring. Her favorite dress this season is the floral “Joan” dress. “It’s so beautiful and so flattering” for every shape. We couldn’t agree more! Try the Banana Republic in Rockefeller Center (626 Fifth Avenue) for the hottest spring looks.
Catch Mad Men on Sundays at 10 p.m. on AMC.
