Getting the Business, Needs More Business

Victor L. Cahn’s new play “Getting the Business” at the Clurman Theater should have paid more attention to “Mad Men.” The plot is basic; young, pretty Patricia has no skills, no degree and no past. She cons her way into an ad executive’s office and sexes her way into the job of a secretary. Her Boss, or should we say victim, is an over sexed, sleazy, naïve blowhard named Bert. The adage flattery gets you everywhere and blackmail and sex get you everything, rings true in this predictable bore.

Saving the day is the fabulous Susan Louise O’Connor who adds a watchabilty to this same old same old plot. She takes the stereotype of what this is and puts a twist onto the characterization. The major problem of this show is the writer and lead actor Victor L. Cahn. He gives nothing new or clever in either his writing or his acting.

Joel Sherry’s set is like the rest of the play half -baked and not finished – -  Neither Mad Men or something new.

“Getting the Business” the Clurman Theater, 410 West 42nd Street, plays until September 1st.
