“Caroline and the Amazing Technicolor Cabaret Show”

We can certainly use a little more color and good music to temper a somewhat difficult reality.

Caroline Ferenczi’s show, “The Amazing Technicolor Cabaret Show” does just that, with many fast-moving, rhythmic songs, as well as several soulful numbers. Caroline exhibited a bubbly warmth onstage that communicated itself to the audience, drawing their interest and evoking enthusiastic applause. Wonderful rhythmic arrangements by Wells Hanley, Musical Director, were evident in the opening number, “Color My World” by Jackie Trent and Tony Hatch. Caroline appeared onstage in a bright orange shiny creation, well-suited to the show’s colorful theme. She appeared at ease with her audience. At times I felt more patter would have added to her connection with her audience.

The wonderful piece “Tapestry,” by Carole King, was poignantly sung with sensitivity to the lovely lyrics. “Laziest Gal in Town” by Cole Porter showed off Caroline’s comedic skills, while “Bidin’ my Time” by George and Ira Gershwin was played by Hanley and sung by the songstress with an easy swingy rhythm.

“Roses are Red” by Al Byron and Paul Evans was performed in a folksy style and had the audience swaying to the music. Then there were several spirited numbers–”Heatwave” by Eddie Holland/Lamont Dozier/Brian Holland with a country-western feel and the hilarious “Menopause Blues” by Cybil Shepherd/Tom Adam—a rollicking arrangement, emphasizing a problematic female condition. Both were energetically done with Wells Hanley backing up Caroline’s renditions with great artistry. I did feel that the more soulful songs should have been emphasized.

Of course, who could resist the tunes, “Sunshine, Lollipops and Rainbowsand “Orange Colored Sky” completing the ambitious collection of songs so enjoyably performed by the perky piece of colorful confetti, Caroline Ferenczi, and her wonderful Musical Director Wells Hanley. Caroline’s Director, Gerry Geddes put together this amazing collection of upbeat melodies.

The “AmazingTechnicolor Cabaret Show” accomplished what most shows should strive to emulate—a thoroughly enjoyable evening where the audience feels a little better about the world and leaves happily humming the tunes. This wonderful show needs to go through the venues many more times. There is an additional show on Sunday, Sept. 16, 7:30 pm
