Don’t count Ben Vereen out. The “Pippin,” “Roots,” “Jesus Christ Superstar,” wows in music. T2C was lucky enough to be invited to a press viewing of Ben’s new show. Starting with a Magic to Do/ Magical Mystery Tour, done jazz style, Vereen’s personal style is all in the eyes, with smooth movement and gestures that are just right.
Reflecting on life with the Charles Aznovor ballad “I Didn’t See the Time Go By.“ His powerful emotions are accented, by personal way of sharing his life through song.
Vereen then rocked the stage with “Gotta A Lot of Livin To Do” from “Bye Bye Birdie” scat style and what a scatter he is.
Back into the 70’s with a Lalo Schifrin version of “Ain’t No Stopping Us Now,” mixed with “Ain’t No Mountain.” LA Disco is back in New York and it has never sounded better or as infectious. Perfect for the New York disco, turned Cabaret at 54 Below.
Ending Vereen sang softly to a bass crooning “Your Song. ”That ended with a pictures and a interview.
Vereen has appeared on Broadway in Jelly’s Last Jam, Fosse, Chicago and Wicked. In January, 2012, Mr. Vereen was inducted into the Theatre Hall of Fame.
