“My View” – Stephen Sorokoff
The legendary Barry Kaye, in one of the most interesting shows of this year’s Cabaret season, got many standing ovations from his totally sold out evening at Feinstein’s. It started when Barry took the stage and announced: “Tonight, you are going to hear a voice, the likes of which has never been heard before at Feinstein’s!”
Barry’s once a year event started with his Debut at 82 (Don’t Tell Mama), It’s Me at 83 (Metropolitan Room), this years For More at 84 (Feinstein’s) and next year’s Still Alive at 85 (TBA). Barry’s passionate and ebullient abilities as a singer insured (pardon the pun) the success of the evening. The crowd went wild after every number as Barry sang solo or “harmonized” with a wonderful array of talented friends he had assembled. Pianist Norma Curley was musically inventive and supported Barry as his booming baritone went from Opera to the American Songbook. The wonderful Joe Valone shared the stage with Barry for most of the evening, singing back up and a few great operatic solos himself. Joining Barry were Ann Hoyt, Jamie deRoy, and Eddie Brill. It was an emotional, touching and fun filled evening. As Barry gave a $25,000 check to his friend Curtis Silwa for the Guardian Angels, he encouraged the totally comped audience of friends and family to make a donation to their favorite charity. Said Barry, “Do it because it will make you feel good.” For sure, everyone in the room felt good after Barry’s birthday party. Barry – - hint hint – - Carnegie at 85?
