Art and Academy – A Vision of the Future?

Hitting the Fashion Week venue for the first time this year, you notice organization. Maybelline has a slot machine that dispenses red lipstick, blue tattooed eye shadow and purple nail polish. TRESemme has split end repair, Pepsi furnishes the soda high with Pepsi One and Fiber One provides nutrition with a delicious 90 calorie caramel, chocolate pretzel bar. The Art and Academy show is normally one of my favorites as it is new designers being viewed by the best. In house were: scouts from Michael Kors, Ralph Lauren and Calvin Klein. In attendance were those annoying housewives dressed for the prom. Upper crust trailer trash Alex McCord and her husband Simon van Kempen, of course, hogged the spotlight. Fashionistas were very down played and the first two rows looked ordinary except for black sequins. Fashion Week has been invaded and the men/boys have taken over. I have never seen more men in attendance than at this show. Skinny ties, fedoras, looking like Chuck wannabes from “Gossip Girl.” But this is not about the people attending, this is about fashion and this season the tent was packed.

The French Textile Collection: Feminine black and white flowers, cut silk in mauve and black, all long and a throw back to Victorian 50s, followed by three pieces with African influences.

Iglika Vasileve Mathews: Short Grey dress with longer coat then the same in camel with a pants suit in wool. Cream pants suit and a crème dress with studs in a 60’s influence rounded necks.

Jisum Lee and Liza Quinones: Metallic green/ blue shapeless and ill fitted. Gunny sacks for the generation that is fit and toned…not happening.

Yanfel Fan: Black and white geometric for “The Matrix.” Perfect for the Scientologist or Tom Cruise’s next wife. “Stepford Wives” here we come.

Jie Jessie Liu and Tanja Milutinovic: Boxy stripes in metallic, grays and white. High collars like a neck brace.

Ginie C. Y, Huang: Tropical neon green florescent pink, tangerine lemon yellow and bright red with furry attachments. Dr. Seuss would fall in love. Again, what is with the high collars?

Stephanie Touch: Boxy off-white, long pant shorts, These designs were interesting by taking trends that were in a prior year and adding the touch of low slung belts, open necks and shapeless. Great, if you are skinny; horrid if you have one ounce of fat.

Jarida Karnjanasirirat: Grey ………………..and a touch of white. Not a great ending.

According to this show we are covering up and have gone prudish. Forget grey skies because our clothes will reflect the dreariness of life.
