There is a new movie version of Annie and Jay Z is providing musical direction. The film is a vehicle for Will Smith’s daughter Willow.The rapper, who signed the “Whip My Hair” singer to his record label last year, has signed on to take charge of the soundtrack for the film. Jay-Z sampled the soundtrack to “Annie” to yield one of his biggest records in “Hard Knock Life (The Ghetto Song)” in 1999. The song was produced by legendary beat maker Mark The 45 King and appeared on the mogul’s third album Vol. 2… Hard Knock Life.
Jay-Z is expected to write more new songs for the movie. Will Smith confirmed he will produce the movie.
Martin Charnin, was the creator and first director of the Tony Award-winning Broadway production of the musical “Annie.” Charnin has been the director, lyricist, composer, librettist, producer or combination of the aforementioned for over 75 theatrical productions including “Annie.” He received a Grammy Award for Jay-Z’s rap album “Hard Knock Life”.
“Annie” began in the 1920′s as an orphan, her dog and caregiver Daddy Warbucks.
Actress and Oscar-winning screenwriter Emma Thompson is writing a new script for the film musical.
