A Fascinating Girl about Town: Tracy McMillan’s New Book, “Why You’re Not Married Yet”

Fashion Designer Nanette Lepore (l) and Tracy McMillan (r) with T2C's Fascinating Girl about Town Charlotte Reed at McMillan's book launch of "Why You're Not Married Yet" at Lepore's downtown boutique.

Tracy McMillan is a television writer whose credits include Mad Men, United States of Tara and the American version of Life on Mars. Based on her wildly popular February 2011 Huffington Post article (one of the site’s most-viewed of all time and  named one of TIME magazine’s 2011 Top Ten Opinion Pieces), her newest book, entitled Why You’re Not Married Yet, provides women with the straight talk about understanding who they are and how to get out of their way (so to speak) to find a man.

With chapter titles such as “You’re Shallow,” “You’re Crazy,” “You’re a Mess,” “You’re a Dude,” McMillan identifies personality types and  explains how these women with their behavior and beliefs have been detrimental to their finding and maintaining a relationship.  Then, she provides advice as to how these women can adjust their conduct and develop a winning strategy to finding the relationship that they deserve.

Pamela Cannon (l), Executive Editor of Ballantine Books, and the lovely andrefreshing McMillan (r)

Specifically, Tracy told me that the book is not about men but having women understand who they are and take 100% of the responsibility for the men that they have brought into their lives-whether these guys are good or bad.

“Women have to be honest with themselves about the kinds of attitudes and behaviors that block their ability to love themselves and other people more fully,” said Tracy. “I am not a therapist, but a woman who primarily uses my history as a foster child, the relationships that I have had with three husbands and numerous boyfriends as examples to help other women.”

According to Pamela Cannon, Executive Editor of Ballantine Books, “the books is so smart…It’s like talking to a good friend who can dispense tough love while giving you  this razor-sharp wit …..because she’s been there!”

Also, another women who admits that she has “been there” too was Fashion Designer Nanette Lepore, the host of event. The book launch was held at her Soho boutique .  Lepore with her fun-loving attitude  entertained me with some amusing stories about years gone past with the young men of Youngstown, Ohio.  Soon after coming to New York, Lepore met and married artist Bob Savage who helms the business side of her worldwide brand as its President.

Towards the end of party, while standing next to her current boyfriend, Tracy described herself as a “work in progress,” but I could only wonder if the loving boyfriend would be husband #4.

Either way, Tracy is a charming and witty as her book.  I look forward to seeing her again. And, her book is must read for gals about town.
